“May I come in, Sir?” I peeked in the
interview room.
A man in his mid-thirties was talking on
phone. Looking at me, he waved his hand asking me to wait for five minutes.
Then he continued his call, walking from one end of the room to the other. The
room had computers lined up in its periphery. In the centre was a partition, on
either side of which there was a big table with two chairs placed facing each
other. The other partition was occupied by a pair of an interviewer and a
prospective candidate.
‘What if I couldn't answer a question? What
if the interviewer asks me something I don’t know? What if I get rejected? What
if…’, a train of thoughts had just left the platform and it’s driver had no
idea where it would stop.
“What happened?” Someone pulled the chain.
I turned back. It was Mr. French cut.
“He asked me to come after five minutes and
two minutes are still left”, I answered pointing towards the wrist watch.
“Alright! I need to leave now. Good Luck
for the date.” He winked at me while turning to leave.
I smiled and said “Thanks”.
The train resumed its journey but this time
the driver was aware of the destination.
‘I told you, a smile can do wonders’. It clicked.
‘I told you, a smile can do wonders’. It clicked.
‘I am not going to enter the interview room
and I am not going to be interviewed by an interviewer. Instead I am going for
a date. The only twist is: rather than being romantically appealing, I need to
be technically appealing. Nothing more.’
I sounded convincing yet unbelievable to myself.
I sounded convincing yet unbelievable to myself.
Just then, my date called me inside.
“Good afternoon, Sir”, I greeted.
He nodded his head. “Please take your seat
and give me your resume.” I pulled out the chair to sit and then
handed him my resume.
“While I go through this, start with your
introduction, Aisha”,he pointed towards the resume and started reading it.
He seemed quite impressed after I finished
my introduction, more so because he had to pull the chain. If he had not
interrupted me, I would have spoken for another minute. It had clearly set the mood. Thus, began
the date.
Initially, my date was more interested in
knowing about my people and management skills since I had done a lot of
co-curricular work and gradually he moved on to more technical stuff like
programming.
The technical date got over in about forty minutes.
When I came out of the room, I had a sense of satisfaction and a big smile on
my face.
*****
Two days later, Neha called me.
“Congratulations”, she shouted.
“For what?”
“We both have been selected. The list of
selected candidates is up on the college notice board. Didn't you check it?”
"No".
I was happy. I thanked her and also
congratulated her back.
‘I knew I would get selected.’
Just then my phone beeped. It was a message
from an unknown number. It read “Congratulations Aisha, you blew your date J”
The train resumed again. This time it was
those light green eyes behind the aviators, the spiked hair…
I had two dates in a single day.
To be Contd J
To be Contd J
THE END.
